Rattray: Terry Red

The following is a review of Rattray's Terry Red I did on 2/21/2006

Brand:Rattray
Blender:Kohlhase, Kopp und Co. KG
Tin Description:A pleasant blend of light Carolina, Virginia and Black Cavendish. Rum, Ginger and Cherry gives a mild flavor for everyone will enjoy. This mixture burns very well and dry in the pipe.
Country of Origin:DE
Curing Group:Air Cured
Contents:
Black Cavendish
Virginia
Cut:Broken Flake

Terry Red - The can I cracked I think was dried out a bit...which catered to a little different smoking experience with this one that perhaps some of the others. I found that the Rum, Ginger and Cherry flavors were only found in the tin aroma but hardly detected by me in the smoke. It packs and smokes very well but is bland to me. A bowl of Terry Red is just a so so smoke from my sampling. First of the Rattray's to try, for me, I will continue to find something better in this family of tobacco...eventually...for now I have Terry Red and Charles Mixture here to sample...looking forward to Old Growrie and some others.

Peterson: Sweet Killarney

The following is a review of Peterson's Sweet Killarney I did on 2/27/06.

Brand:Peterson
Blender:Peterson
Tin Description:A unique mixture of selected tobaccos including Virginia Burley and Maryland leaf with some Black Cavendish and topped with a cream Caramel flavor. To make this wonderful tobacco even more attractive, it is blended with hand-rubbed Virginia flake which results in a fantastic aroma.
Country of Origin:IE
Curing Group:Air Cured
Contents:
Burley
Cavendish
Black Cavendish
Virginia
Maryland
Cut:Ribbon
Packaging:50g Tin

Sweet Killarney - Raisins a blaze! I love the various cuts in this mixture, made it rather interesting but the tastes are a little too much for me, smelt like melting raisins. No doubt a quality weed just not for me. I will smoke up what I have and am thankful, as it was a gift just nothing I see myself purchasing anytime soon.

Peter Stokkebye: Natural

The following review is of Peter Stokkebye's Natural (Bulk) I did on 3/19/06

Brand:Peter Stokkebye
Blender:UNKNOWN
Tin Description:A light loose and ready rubbed Cavendish blend consisting of quality mild flue-cured Virginia tobaccos with some light Burleys. Straight Cavendish cut.
Country of Origin:UNKNOWN

Natural by Peter Stokkbye - light and mild. Everything about this is faintly present. I'm not too sure what else to add other than to echo that this may be a good one if you want something to smoke but don't care for enjoying a pipe...good perhaps for some smoke signals...Having said that I would smoke this all day long compared to the drugstore blends...anyday.

Just For Him: Longbottom Leaf

The following is a review of the Middle Earth Pipeweed Series. This review is of the blend Longbottom Leaf produced by justforhim.com. I reviewed this weed on 2/18/06 and must say my tastes have changed as of 1/2/09. The casing on this blend is a little too much for my pallet these days but if you like aromatics and are scared to try English this is a decent start.

Brand:Just For Him
Blender:Bob Schafer
Tin Description:This is the first in the Middle Earth Pipeweed Series! Fragrant Virginias are blended with a hint of vanilla to produce the finest leaf the Shire has to offer!
Country of Origin:US
Curing Group:Air Cured
Contents:
Virginia
Cut:Ribbon
Packaging:Bulk

Long-Bottom Leaf is a special blend from Just For Him. They classify it as aromatic English.

Start: Light and tiny whiffs of vanilla trickle out. Not overdone just notable.

Mid-Bowl: A consistent smoke here and a pleasant change if your looking for something with a little added flavor to mix things up. Hints of cinnamon oatmeal here too.

Finish: Finishes as started...good and tasty. Non-smokers will enjoy the room note...not over-powerful just pleasant.

Light on the artificial flavoring this blend is enjoyable. Nice to try but won't keep it on hand. The best I have had, in this genre of smoke, is Just For Him blend available from justforhim.com. It starts off creamy and rounds off into a delicious nutty euphoria.

Benjamin Hartwell: Evening Stroll

The following is a review I did of Benjamin Hartwell's Evening Stroll on 02/21/2006.

Brand:Benjamin Hartwell
Blender:Benjamin Hartwell
Tin Description:Mild and Flavorful - Benjamin Hartwell's friend, Jim Murdoch, was a real dandy, always dressed in the most fashionable styles of his day. He preferred his pipe tobaccos mild and with a hint of sweetness to please the women as he walked by. Ben made his blend for Jim and called it Evening Stroll.
Country of Origin:US
Curing Group:Air Cured
Cut:Ribbon
Packaging:50g Tin

Evening Stroll or better yet Evening Desert. This is a fruity vanilla aromatic blend...perhaps a hint of maple mid-bowl. The tin aroma is a little strong in the vanilla and burns much the same but leaves a pleasant room note for my wife...but I don't smoke for my wife's benefit =).

I don't know what I think of this weed. Its hard reviewing sometimes because all the tobacco I have are all quality smokes, including this can. Without any comparisons to what I enjoy smoking and on its own merits for what it is...its good but I think the flavoring is a little too high for me to have it around, even as a goto candy treat. I will polish this can off and leave it at that.

Rattray: Charles Mixture

The following is a review of Rattray's Charels Mixture I did on 02/21/2006.

Charles Mixture - I think I will just let Charles keep this mixture. Quality tobacco gone bad with flavoring. This weed looks lovely in the tin but smokes like pancakes with maple syrup. I was wondering why I got such a good deal on this tin and a can of Terry Red. I am moving on...

Brand:Rattray
Blender:Kohlhase, Kopp und Co. KG
Tin Description:The perfect smoke. This light tasting, full aromatic tobacco is a special recipe of Cavendish & Va. tobaccos mixed with broadleaf Carolina. It has a pleasing aroma and is blended mildly for the palate and the tonque.
Country of Origin:DE
Curing Group:Air Cured
Cut:Broken Flake
